Item is as described. Installation was a breeze and I was able to get everything off of the hard drive of my dead PC. Now I have an extra external HD as well.
item did not work. i tried thres drives and none worked. all three worked in a different enclosure
Ok, just to make this simple, different Hard Drives have different settings for Master with Slave, Or Master as Single Drive. VERY EASY to follow the pictures. Some of them will have you still use the shunt to get the Master Single drive setting, some not.
NOW. ALSO. Indeed, on some drives this can mean that you can just remove the shunt, or put it in a 'storage' position on the pins on the back of the drive.
Just look over your hard drive really well, the information is there. EVERY drive I have, Maxtor, Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital & Samsung, they ALL have the cable settings printed on the drive somewhere. If you look at that, you will see if you need to remove the shunt entrirely for Master SINGLE DRIVE, or Single Drive with NO SLAVE.
You can go to any Hard Drive Mfg's Web Site & find the different jumper settings in picture form. Look for Master Single Drive First, the just plain Master setting if you do not find that one.I hope this will be of help to someone,IMHO whytegold5
Certianly a good cheap and cheerfu external enclosure to let you make use of old IDE drives you might have lying around.I'm a bit concerned there was no assembly instructions. Turns out one of the two tiny screws that secure the little circuit board to the end piece was the wrong size and had slipped out. Took me a while to work out you have to slide out the plastic strips on the sides to get at the holes to secure the drive in the case. After i'd worked that out, it was very easy indeed to install. One major problem, though - went to plug in power, but the socket dropped through the plastic case. Had to put it in and secure with a blob of glue. I know this is a cheapo unit, but at least this could have been picked up at quality control.
When that has happened, I simply shut the switch off, wait 5 sec and repower 100% then it comes up. Had one that did not work upon receipt. Documentation lacking but easy to assemble. Not a big deal based on low cost of this drive case. No problem returning. Periodically, the drive is not recognized by PC (USB2). An excellent way to reuse PATA hard drives that you have stored away that you can not use in current PC's that have SATA controllers. Just make them external drives
